SHOOTER (2007)

TITLE
Shooter

STARRING
Mark Wahlberg, Danny Glover, Michael Pena, Kate Mara, Rhona Mitra, Ned Beatty, Justin Louis, Tate Donovan

WHAT THE BOX DOESN'T TELL YOU
Apparently I blinked earlier this year and a little film entitled Shooter came out starring my personal favorite "rapper-turned-actor" Marky Mark (Wahlberg). Now, while there are other great rapper-turned-actor types, Ice Cube, Ice T, LL Cool J, this blog entry is not submitted with the intention of discussing their merits - it is however about to discuss what a good little film Shooter was. Let me preface this with the knowledge that I've not often shot a gun since I was a teenager and amidst my enjoyment of the film, I had a husband who was questioning whether Army Rangers, rather than Marines would be sent on the mission, and a constant counting of shots fired, as well as his assessment of whether shots could indeed have been made. So, while I am not a technical expert and do not attest to such liberties the film may have taken in that area, I will say it was enjoyable, political, and at the very least directed/acted well.

WHY I WOULD RENT IT AGAIN
Totally would rent this film again! Story moved along, Antoine Fuqua is a good director, I haven't always enjoyed his films, but he does what needs to with whom and what he is given. Mark Wahlberg is hot, and I am willing to admit that although Donnie was totally cuter back in the day, Mark has proven himself the better actor and better bod of the famous Wahlberg brothers. The film is and must be predictable, approximately two minutes after Danny Glover's character was introduced, I remarked "hmmm, is he the good guy, or the bad guy." The movie was unfairly panned and released without much of the hype that other less substantive movies were given. Ironically, I really enjoyed Shooter and Ghost Rider, but thought Half Nelson and The Prestige, which critics favored, were by in large poor. Typically, my preferences lean towards those of the critics and away from commercial successes, but I think we are deep in the days of striving too hard to be meaningful and gritty, because widespread appreciation of a movie now symbolizes a selling out of creative and ethical values. Again, this is unfair.

SPOILER ALERT: You cannot for one minute doubt that doom is ahead for the bad guys, and like all Hollywood movies, the hero survives - but at least he's earned it by the end of the movie!

WILL MY GIRLFRIEND/BOYFRIEND LIKE IT?
Yeah.

SPECIAL FEATURES
Blah - nothing of interest, not even any good trailers.

MISS POTTER (2006)

TITLE
Miss Potter

STARRING
Renee Zellweger, Ewan McGregor, Emily Watson, Barbara Flynn, Bill Patterson, Lloyd Owen

WHAT THE BOX DOESN'T TELL YOU
The box is dead on, though it fails to convey how intriguing the events that led to Beatrix Potter's successful career and eventual matrimonial union were. Beatrix Potter, like many of the great female writers produced by the UK, was instrumental in creating writings that are with us to this day and have become very much a part of our world's literary culture. Watching the movie will briefly expand on this knowledge. As truth is a matter of perspective, always, you will see how her success, which was unlike many authors was evident during her lifetime appears to have been callously overlooked by her own family for several years. Potter (Zellweger) falls in love and is briefly romanced by her publisher (McGregor) with whom she shares much of her success. She endears herself to his family, most notably his spinster sister (Watson) a kind of kindred spirit, but is forced to hide the nature of her relationship with him in order to gain the consent to marry from her parents. Of course life is not a fairytale and the rest of the story is gripping and emotional, but is not without the charm displayed in the first half of the scenes.

WHY I WOULD RENT IT AGAIN
A lovely little movie, with a great, perhaps overlooked performance by Zellweger (because of course she was gifted her the Oscar for Cold Mountain). Although she was clearly the star of that movie, high praise cannot be levied upon her for a role like that when her portrayal of Beatrix Potter, that is sentimental and biographical in nature, is so much more delicate and rife with opportunities to show talent. I was also surprised to see how tall Emily Watson is by comparison to Zellweger. I certainly didn't see that coming.

WILL MY GIRLFRIEND/BOYFRIEND LIKE IT?
This verges on chick-flick territory, but my husband managed to watch most of it and not be bored out of his mind.

GHOST RIDER (2007)

TITLE
Ghost Rider

STARRING
Nicholas Cage, Eva Mendes, Wes Bentley, Peter Fonda, Donal Logue, Sam Elliott

WHAT THE BOX DOESN'T TELL YOU
So, I knew this would be entertaining, if nothing else. Cage is a reliable actor and we have some pretty sophisticated computer animation that can do whatever you need - even morph him into a fiery leather-clad skull riding a flame-breathing chopper. Was this true to the Ghost Rider comic? I have no idea, nor do I care. Ask someone who goes to Comicon if you really want to know and remember, those folks are like the people that actually read J.R.R. Tolkien, versus those of us who just saw Peter Jackson's LOTR movies and regard them as "the trilogy." There's good, there's evil, and there are some incredible stunts and CGI.

WHY I WOULD RENT IT AGAIN
Because it's just ridiculous to me in today's day and age that someone would pan this movie when crap like The 40 Year Old Virgin is out there being heralded as something to write about and we've got so few talented actresses out there, that we have to give Hilary Swank two academy awards. Allow me this digression, the AFI has released their newest list of the top 100 films, and most were made before I was born - a completely understandable occurrence. It's not as if the birth of someone like me makes film during my lifetime that much better than films preceding my birth. However, my favorite writer/director M. Night Shyamalan's The Sixth Sense managed to make the list at like No. 83. Today, the accomplishment of his film was belittled on a mediocre edition of some NPR program in favor of The 40 Year Old Virgin. In the same breath, these astute observers of everything important mocked the sanity of including something like Titanic in the list. While Titanic is far from my favorite movie and is not in my Top 500 films even, I acknowledge that it made a lot of money off of a story we already knew the ending to, as well as gave us some of our brightest Gen X stars. Now, we might return these witty connesieurs of film and media to reality by reminding them that I don't even remember the name of their program on a station that has to beg folks twice a year for the money to stay afloat. Impressive - truly impressive. So, I will watch movies like Ghost Rider until I puke, because every now and again, a mainstream movie can be just as deserving of it's place in the Top 100 as something like Nashville. Yeah, sure, tell me more than one of my readers has ever seen that movie!!!!

GRAY MATTERS (2006)

TITLE
Gray Matters

STARRING
Heather Graham, Bridget Moynahan, Tom Cavanagh, Molly Shannon, Sissy Spacek, Alan Cumming, Rachel Shelley

WHAT THE BOX DOESN'T TELL YOU
Not your average romantic comedy with a happy-to-be-underrated homosexual storyline. There's some real deep dialogue that's as funny as it can possibly be without being, and I suppose it still is, heartbreaking. Heather Graham plays Gray, a sexually confused ad exec, whose surgeon brother (Cavanagh) ends up, thanks to her efforts, striking the jackpot with a graceful and enchanting woman (Moynahan) on their first date. Unfortunately, Graham also finds herself falling for Moynahan and revelations such as this do not come easy for any of the parties involved. As she struggles to discover more about herself, her attempts not to harm the fragile new relationship between her brother and Moynahan experiences a disconnect, eventually forcing her out of her brother's life. With the encouragement of some great friends, (Shannon and Cumming), Gray is able to move forward with her new life and regain the trust of her brother.

WHY I WOULD RENT IT AGAIN
The chemistry among the characters is amazing even if the the antics are a bit predictable and the message very pedestrian. There are some great scenes notably those which empower Gray and show her stresses. Originally, I heard this was going to be a series, which struck me as odd. How could you move the concept of this film beyond a season, and what would happen with a show entitled, Gray Matters and another called Grey's Anatomy? Would folks be confused and how would these actors manage their movie and existing series schedules? Not everyone can be Kelly Ripa. Thankfully, Gray Matters is just as endearing as a film.

WILL MY GIRLFRIEND/BOYFRIEND LIKE IT?
Yes.

SPECIAL FEATURES
Not many to speak of - it's pretty low on the extra's budget.

PRIMEVAL (2007)

TITLE
Primeval

STARRING
Sominic Purcell, Brooke Langton, Orlando Jones, Gideon Emery,

WHAT THE BOX DOESN'T TELL YOU
There is nothing this box doesn't tell you, instead of focusing on the description on the back though, look at the creature on the front. Yes folks, Gustave the feared killer who seems to live from the 1800's - present and has slaughtered countless Barundi villagers, is a crocodile. Like other viewers of this film, I was hoping for more, even just something slightly less creature-related. Perhaps a witch doctor who conjures some sort of beast spirit to life or a plot of a more significant caliber with a rebel tribe trying to protect their people who have created some sort of nameless, faceless killer and past down the responsibility through generations in an effort to keep the evil warlords away. Sadly, this is just Lake Placid set in Africa with the guy from Prison Break and two of the actors from The Replacements.

WHY I WOULD RENT IT AGAIN
Based on actual events can only take you so far, and unfortunately that is not far enough to get me to watch a crocodile movie again. It's not a bad effort, it's just not worth the investment of time. Strengths: Dominic Purcell is hott, there's a sub plot afoot about the fighting in Barundi, which the movie claims is the poorest nation in the world, and Brooke Langton must have done her own hair for an early scene in the movie where she sports a hideous-looking ponytail. Weaknesses: Just about everything else, but nothing more than selling a movie to viewers, which couldn't otherwise be sold and the stupid dog. Note - if you have kids, a dog, a cat, some sort of incredible against-all-odds-it-survived kind of pet and we are in a life or death situation, I am not saving your kid, dog, cat, random pet. That is how all truly great sci-fi /horror and their subsequent sequels get ruined, furthermore it is a cheap ploy to get a wider audience to theatres by incorporating these elements into the movie. Lastly, I will have enough work to do just saving myself.

WILL MY GIRLFRIEND/BOYFRIEND LIKE IT?
Sci-fi fans will like it, but there's a lot of graphic death and I advise you not to let your kids watch the film unless you want them to hate crocodiles for the rest of their lives - then by all means traumatize them to the max.

SPECIAL FEATURES
Blah....but there are a lot of trailers for other movies not involving crocodiles.

BREACH (2007)

TITLE
Breach

STARRING
Chris Cooper, Laura Linney, Ryan Phillippe, Gary Cole, Dennis Haysbert, Caroline Dhavernas, Kathleen Quinlan

WHAT THE BOX DOESN'T TELL YOU
Set in the days of AG days of Ashcroft (crica 2001) these are the alleged events that transpired to one of the biggest internal espionage cases ever for the FBI. And this movie was every bit as exciting and interesting as one would expect such landmark occurrences to be, without being cheesy or overacted.

I might never be able to say that Ryan Phillippe (O'Neill) is a great actor, but he's talented and unfortunately a role like this hasn't come along to him since Antitrust, where he played a similar, yet less complex character. Linney (Burroughs) and Cooper (Hanssen) are however great actors in their own right and they bring a lot of continuity to the film.

WHY I WOULD RENT IT AGAIN
An enjoyable rental, this is a movie well worth the $4.00 and most people are suckers for something based on a true story regardless of embellishments. I liked the depth of the characters and and the intelligent interplay between Phillippe's character and the others. Unimaginably, the real-life Eric O'Neill must have been put in numerous difficult scenarios and while the movie bills itself as film about his life, it is very much centered on the details of the Hanssen's own demise.

WILL MY GIRLFRIEND/BOYFRIEND LIKE IT?
Yes, absolutely.

SPECIAL FEATURES
Average features at best.

DADDY'S LITTLE GIRLS (2007)

TITLE
Daddy's Little Girls

STARRING
Gabrielle Union, Idris Elba, Louis Gossett, Jr., Tasha Smith, Tracee Ellis Ross, China Anne McClain, Lauryn Alisa McClain, Sierra Aylina McClain

WHAT THE BOX DOESN'T TELL YOU
Tyler Perry proved himself with this one. There's no tired humour or Madea popping up to annoy all of you best sensibilities, just a heartfelt sincere drama with some great acting. Perry built some truly admirable characters interwoven with a solid storyline that shows real development. Monty (Elba) a struggling mechanic aspiring to attain his piece of the American Dream by purchasing a local garage from boss and mentor Willie (Gossett, Jr.) is thrust into single parenthood after the death of his daughters (McClain sisters) maternal grandmother. Matters worsen when his well-funded mother of his children and her current lover, a renowned drug dealer and all around despicable guy start proceedings to take custody of the girls. All hope is lost until Monty meets Julia, (Union) a high-powered Atlanta attorney at the top of her game. Of course life complicates matters in both good and bad ways.

WHY I WOULD RENT IT AGAIN
Truly an enjoyable movie with some new talent and succinct packaging. I heard the movie was not well-edited and I would beg to differ. As a person primarily of Caucasian descent, I didn't feel left out of the emotional elements of the movie or the story it told. It's pretty universal good writing and strong pool of talent help all audiences of any culture remain engaged.

WILL MY GIRLFRIEND/BOYFRIEND LIKE IT?
Yes.

SPECIAL FEATURES
There are actually quite a few, the commentary with Perry is most worth a watch, but is also and investment of time.

THE HAWK IS DYING (2006)

TITLE
The Hawk is Dying

STARRING
Paul Giamatti, Michelle Williams, Michael Pitt, Rusty Schwimmer, Karl Anthony , Robert Wisdom

WHAT THE BOX DOESN'T TELL YOU
Nobody who reads this blog should ever argue to me that Paul Giamatti is not one of the most talented actors out there, and to that talent he remains true in this film. However, this is one of the most depressing independent features I've seen. I think when people want to characterize a movie like this they use terms like "dramatic," "off-beat" and "stark." Essentially, the story is about a lonely garage owner named George (Giamatti) whose coexistence with his sister (Schwimmer) and autistic nephew (Pitt) is augmented by his desire to be a falconer and constant capturing of beautiful, but difficult to train, creatures. His desire to train them typically results in their death as they do not eat while being held captive, but the persistence of one falcon to live while George's world is ripped apart at the seams due to a family tragedy inspires him amidst the bleak outlook to soldier on and resolve some of his issues, including those with his confidant (Williams) and co-worker (Wisdom).

WHY I WOULD RENT IT AGAIN
Oh I could not stand to watch this movie again. It is obviously not horrible, but it is a starkly off-beat drama requiring a devoted viewer who enjoys minimalism.

WILL MY GIRLFRIEND/BOYFRIEND LIKE IT?
Not likely.

SPECIAL FEATURES
Lots of previews for movies I might be tempted to check out, scenes left out that were no worse than the ones included.

STOMP THE YARD (2007)

TITLE
Stomp the Yard

STARRING
Columbus Short, Meagan Good, Ne-Yo, Alan Louis, Harry J. Lennix, Darrin Henson, Brian J. White, Valarie Pettiford

WHAT THE BOX DOESN'T TELL YOU
This is a largely uneventful film with a few moving scenes, not much steppin' (a.k.a. stomping) and a ho-hum plot. There are probably 10 against-the-odds style movies like this one that I've seen over the years. Most make more money than it cost to produce them and fail to, on their own merit, make big starts out of the actors who play major characters in the film. Despite this, they are usually entertaining, and occasionally inspiring. The usual good frat vs. bad frat with conflict on the side of brothers in the good frat is overcome to the delight of many.

WHY I WOULD RENT IT AGAIN
It's a fine film, but not one I have to watch again. It moved me to consider watching Drumline which my husband advised was far better, and again is a similar genre. The writing is surprisingly fresh despite a stale premise.

WILL MY GIRLFRIEND/BOYFRIEND LIKE IT?
Yes.

SPECIAL FEATURES
Many, questionable whether they are worth the effort.

THE MESSENGERS (2007)

TITLE
The Messengers

STARRING
Kristen Stewart, John Corbett, Penelope Ann Miller, Dylan McDermott, Dustin Milligan

WHAT THE BOX DOESN'T TELL YOU
It's a pretty basic psychological horror film; the directors are some big deal in China but any of the J-Horror to be Americanized in recent years has more impressive effects. Jess (Stewart) is a city girl obviously displaced by the desires (or desperation) of her parents (McDermott and Miller) to make a go of sunflower farming in North Dakota. With a little help from a transient farm hand named Burwell (Corbett) the family seems to be building a new life, but it is not without its problems mainly encountered by Jess and witnessed by her toddler brother (Turner Brothers) whose inability to speak leaves her without proof of the incidences. The families lives' take a turn for the worse when unexplained hauntings coupled with a disturbing past connection to Burwell is revealed. (SPOILER WARNING - skip remainder of entry.) Some really predictable writing takes place - again we always know the family is rife with conflict and hard feeling all around prevent them from trusting each other. The means by which the movie is billed in the trailers makes more sense than the actual events in the movie.

WHY I WOULD RENT IT AGAIN
No, I wouldn't - it wasn't horrible, but it was pretty average and I certainly didn't see anything that hasn't been done before. I also think the set-up for the relationship between Stewart and Milligan's characters was poor. Just think about it: new girl, only mildly attractive, with a truant past whom he barely knows and he extends himself in a major way to help her.....not really buying it! Should have spent more time building a relationship with those characters. Also, a better twist ending - Burwell was the one who made the large offer on the home and a showdown between fathers occurs where we find out it was not the supernatural but Burwell who killed his entire family.

WILL MY GIRLFRIEND/BOYFRIEND LIKE IT?
Yeah, but the hardcore horror fan will be disappointed.

SPECIAL FEATURES
Lots of previews - yay, some additional behind-the-scenes commentary with the Pang brothers.

VENUS (2006)

TITLE
Venus

STARRING
Peter O'Toole, Leslie Phillips, Jodie Whittaker, Vanessa Redgrave, Richard Griffiths

WHAT THE BOX DOESN'T TELL YOU
It's taken me too long to blog about this movie (I saw it on Tuesday of last week) because I am literally writhing in a state of personal conflict. I liked this movie and all of its merits, which are delineated down to a few, but mainly the carefully crafted talents of Mr. Peter O'Toole and his enigmatic presence onscreen opposite a virtual unknown (Whittaker) almost a quarter of his age. Their barbs were possibly the most charming I've seen all year, though the scenes and storyline are dark and soured. I'm appreciative for the writing, that was more than likely enhanced by the talent, because it is so true to the subject matter. It is easy for us to believe that the Venus tells the hard truth about what happens to our veteran actors after their star has dimmed and the limelight shifted. O'Toole's presence in the film made me question my support of Forrest Whittaker for the Best Actor Oscar. Even before I saw Venus, I imagined that this eighth nomination could be the magic one for O'Toole; I heard his performance was so incredible it had to be seen to be believed. Even that hearsay didn't match-up to the onscreen delivery and power O'Toole wielded. I rescind my support for Forrest Whittaker and say his portrayal of Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland could not compare to that of O'Toole's in Venus, any actor less talented or coarse than O'Toole would have ruined the film. I am quite sure Forrest Whittaker had his only bite at the apple with Last King of Scotland, but that if there is life left in O'Toole he will turn out another performance worthy of the Oscar, and probably continue to be passed over.

WHY I WOULD RENT IT AGAIN
Peter O'Toole's performance.

WILL MY GIRLFRIEND/BOYFRIEND LIKE IT?
Dark movie, difficult subject, men will probably like it more than women.

APOCALYPTO (2006)

TITLE
Apocalypto

STARRING
Rudy Youngblood, Dalia Hernandez, Morris Birdyellowhead, Jonathan Brewer, Carlos Emilio Baez, Amilcar Ramirez

WHAT THE BOX DOESN'T TELL YOU
Gruesome filmmaking is Gibson's specialty and this movie does not stray from from that expertise. If you think of his roles as an actor, especially in action and drama genres, there were always many injuries sustained and no lack of violence. In his role behind the camera as writer and director, he's created some pretty expressive moments, but these are often overshadowed by graphic scenes of humanity exacting its worst upon itself. In this Mayan epic, a young, but somewhat hesitant warrior (Youngblood) must attempt to hide his pregnant wife and their young child from an attacking tribe whose superior combat skills and religiously-inspired motives make for a deadly combination. There's not a lot of historical meat to the story, so its hard to take issue with this re-telling of the events that ultimately led to the downfall of the Mayan civilization, but what we do know is that they began to build and sacrifice well beyond their means - so Apocalypto does capture those elements.

WHY I WOULD RENT IT AGAIN
I find it very difficult to watch films like this for two reasons: 1.) I was expecting more to the story and kept hoping there would be fewer scenes displaying how much Gibson has learned about making pain and torture look real, AND 2.) sometimes the violence is it just too distressing and has ceased to advance the story or plot. I did like the focus on a marginalized culture with regards to cinematic storytelling. The film isn't in English, which is also a credit to the project and helps to preserve some authenticity. I believe the editing was well done, but again there's a lot of graphic violence throughout the film, which can be distracting, because it isn't Riggs getting beat up by the bad guy he's pursuing or 'Mad' Max and his cheesy Aussie kick-ass antics.

WILL MY GIRLFRIEND/BOYFRIEND LIKE IT?
I see this as more a guy film, but could be equally enjoyed by women.

SPECIAL FEATURES
Mel Gibson, making of blah, blah, blah. If you like that stuff, I scrolled through the menu and there is plenty of it.

MUSIC AND LYRICS (2007)

TITLE
Music and Lyrics

STARRING
Drew Barrymore, Hugh Grant, Brad Garrett, Kristen Johnston, Campbell Scott, Haley Bennett

WHAT THE BOX DOESN'T TELL YOU
Oh we've seen this movie 100 or more times in varying different assortments of actors, directors, characters, or stories, and we just love it. Of the romantic comedies with quirky characters and Hollywood style endings, this is par for the course, but is seemingly better than its recent counterparts. Grant and Barrymore have a real chemistry that makes you want more than anything to see them together. Maybe Grant is just a good actor - he has a talent, beyond being simply British (yet able to stand his own against American leads). As always, Barrymore is charming in the role of Sophie Fisher, a woman of simple means, complex personality and genuine self-doubt when it comes to romance.

WHY I WOULD RENT IT AGAIN
I highly recommend this film for anyone - literally anyone, but then again what is there not to like? This is safe filmmaking at its best. As long as you get good actors, who don't hate themselves and each other on the set - you'll turn a tidy buck or two and probably have fun doing so, well done producers, it seems this is the Hollywood formula that cannot fail, barring of course the obvious talents of the actors. Now here is the only thing I will argue against - don't cut some of the best scenes and forget to re-shoot later. For instance, Grant's character, Alex Fletcher gives Rhonda Fisher a gift for her kids in one of the latter scenes when he goes to visit Sophie - the gift doesn't make sense (because the scene that would allude to where and why he purchased it was cut). Be mindful of this.

WILL MY GIRLFRIEND/BOYFRIEND LIKE IT?
Yes, and yes.

SPECIAL FEATURES
Deleted scenes fill in some of the gaps that if you think about the movie, and of course thinking about it is not required, will make sense after catching these.

FAY GRIM (2006)

TITLE
Fay Grim

STARRING
Parker Posey, Jeff Goldblum, Saffron Burrows, James Urbaniak, Liam Aiken, Chuck Montgomery, Thomas Jay Ryan

WHAT THE BOX DOESN'T TELL YOU
This movie must be watched after its predecessor Henry Fool to be fully understood. As an independent film the movie is minimalist and relies heavily on the talents of the actors. Initially, I thought Fay Grim was poorly written, but after watching some excerpts from the first film (done over ten years ago) I realized it was just being true to the characters it already established. In so doing, it does utilize many of the original talents - though there are new characters in this film and some existing ones that do not reappear in this installment. The premise of this film is that Fay Grim (Posey) must travel abroad under the watchful eye of the CIA (led by Goldblum) to recover some of her ex-agent husband's (Ryan) writings in order to free her brother from prison (Urbaniak) and discover the truth about her husband's alleged death.

WHY I WOULD RENT IT AGAIN
With no real emotional attachment to the characters, this film is lacking in every way. Fay Grim is definitely not the installment at which you can pick up the story and run with it. The story itself is not complex, but the interactions between characters and their motivations are. Honestly, it is a style of filmmaking I do not prefer. What is interesting is the Indie Queen -Parker Posey's performance. She is probably always bringing a bit of herself to every role she's taken, but the ticks in her personality, especially as Fay Grim, are fascinating to watch. I will likely rent the original and be able to give a more candid review, at least one that recommends viewing or not viewing the set. Writer/director Hal Hartley has a clear vision for this film, I'm just not sure I can share in it yet.

WILL MY GIRLFRIEND/BOYFRIEND LIKE IT?
For the IF fans only. Remarkably, it was released all at once on DVD, in theaters and on HDNET Movies, a trait explored more by the independent genre. I see this technique becoming increasingly popular across major releases as the equipment to establish one's own home theater is readily available/affordable and prices at the local cineplex rise.

SPECIAL FEATURES
Didn't get to those, mainly because the movie ran long and was so interwoven with Henry Fool that special features were not of interest to me.
